FASHION: Nine West Takes Us Into Fall
Nine West is a company that successfully translates high fashion trends into their footwear and accessory lines on a seasonal basis. What’s their secret? Consistency.
For fall 2015, the overall look is one of classics with a twist. Setting aside the typical black options (say what you want, but it always sells), animal print has become the new neutral. Bordeaux makes a play for runner up status while a large gingham check in black and white stands out amongst the others for pattern recognition.
Regarding styles, pumps are the focus with high heels and t-straps dominating the spectrum. Thigh high or ankle boots will be popular options for Canada’s endless winter, and ballerina flats border on the pretty side (it’s That Girl from the 60s!) or broach men’s brogues (the patent finishes help to keep things feminine).
Bags are mostly structured, with contrasting panels of colour, and variations on the hippie-chic trend with slouchy shapes and fringe are alternates for those not wanting a workaday, 9-5 type of design. Eyewear looks to higher quality materials that add heft to their dramatic shapes (not for the wallflower), and watches keep their face dials large since most people wear them as a form of jewellery rather than a way to tell the time.
And for the men who – might – feel left out while shoe shopping, there’s now William Rast (the line founded by friends Justin Timberlake and Trace Ayala) to keep their soles shod. Think Tennessee meets Hollywood (i.e. footwear with a bit of rock-and-roll studs and buckles). A little bit of country with a touch of celebrity.
Producing collections for Easy Spirit, Adrienne Vittadini, Anne Klein, among others, Nine West continually designs an array of footwear and handbags, jewellery, watches, sunglasses, hats, scarves belts and legwear, without ever missing a step. Pun intended.
