BEAUTY: Wrap Your Nails Up In Texture

This winter is all about staying warm and what better way to warm up than to wrap yourself up in warm textures like cashmere, velvet and a little bit of sparkle. Nail art is a great way to express yourself and just like any trend, it’s perfect to change things up by having a little fun with colours, patterns and my personal favourite, texture.

Try a satin-matte textured nail that will have your nails looking perfectly wrapped up in the finest of fabric that feels as luxurious as it looks. The new Cashmere Matte collection by Essie is a great way to add a clean and soft matte finish to your manicured fingers.

Keep your nails warm this season with a soft and velvety finish. Ciate London helps create the perfect textured finish to your manicure. This fuzzy and fashionable finish is a great way to create a textured nail that will have people talking about how you accomplished such a unique nail.

Add some jewels to your look by creating a textured dimension to your nails the same way you add jewels to your wardrobe. A sparkly finish was a common trend seen on the runway at both New York and Toronto Fashion week with the Colour Show Jewles by MAYBELLINE. These textured sparkles are a great way to make a textured statement this season and add a little extra glam to your winter look.

BEAUTY: DIY Mani at essie’s beach house at Luminato

Ready for summer? Because we are – okay, let’s be honest, we’ve been ready since last September. Nothing says summer like the beach and last week, essie invited us to their Luminato beach house for a DIY nail tutorial with lead nail artist Rita Remark (pictured below).

Nail art is sure to complete any summer look. Remark shows us a quick and easy beach-inspired mani with the use of a few nail colours and no need for tools. But before you paint on the colours, you need the proper foundation. Remark suggests filing your nails and applying a thin base coat, we used essie’s First Base Top Coat. Once that’s done, it’s time to pick out the colours.

Remark created the look with Sand Tropez, white and blue where the neutral looks like the beach and the blue looks like waves rolling in. I created the same look but with different colours. I wanted something more vibrant and went with Sand Tropez (base colour), Naughty Nautical (first wave) and Aruba Blue (second wave). To create this look, just follow the steps below.

1. File and paint your nails with a thin top coat.
2. Pick your three colours and paint the lightest colour on your whole nail (this becomes the base colour). Paint two coats and let it dry.
3. This is where the nail art comes into play. Grab your second colour (the second lightest) and paint lines from mid-nail to the top, stagger the lines to create the waves (check out the short video below!). Remark explains, “the trick to this is having the right amount of nail polish on your brush. Make sure there’s only polish on one side of the brush so it doesn’t glob or spill onto the rest of your nail.”
4. Repeat step 3 with the darkest colour but a few millimetres closer to the top of the nail, so you can see all three colours.
5. Let it dry. Apply a top coat, quick dry drops and cuticle oil (optional). And voila!

If you’re feeling ambitious, this can be done with all ten nails. Another option is to pick an accent nail and just do one (this also makes it easier when you use your non-dominant hand). I found that after the first few nails, it was getting easier. By the tenth nail I was almost a pro.

Thank you Rita Remark and essie for the DIY tutorial. Now that our nails are done and we’re beach ready, it’s time to grab the bikini and soak up some sun!

BEAUTY: essie Nails the Runway Trends at WMCFW Spring/Summer 2014

At World Mastercard Fashion Week, the only thing hotter than the fashion trends are the nail art trends. Throughout the week, we spotted nail art created by essie’s Lead Nail Artist Rita Remark. After all, a runway look is never really complete without complementing nails.

This season, the trends were more neutral and subdued, unlike previous years. Kicking off WMCFW, Mikhael Kale, Beaufille and David Dixon all created nail looks that were soft and feminine. Remark used Sand Tropez (soft beige), Topless & Barefoot (nude) and the iconic Ballet Slippers (soft pink) to create delicate nails and added dimension with essie’s Matte About You top coat or tipped with luminescent Silver Bullions for a bit of sparkle.

The midweek shows were a bit edgier. Laura Siegel showcased various shades of blue (Midnight Cami and Lapis of Luxury) and featured nail designs that were an extension of the fabrics. While at Mackage, we saw a funky twist to the classic French manicure (with Topless and Barefoot, Ballet Slippers and tipped with No Place Like Chrome) that matched the metallic highlights in the clothes and accessories.

So far we’ve seen feminine elegance, blue ombre nails and metallic tips, but the essie team wanted to take a note from the mattified nail trends from the NYFW runways to finish off WMCFW.

For Soia & Kyo, Remark groomed models’ nails into short soft square shapes and used soft pinks, beiges and light greys to complement the models’ skin tone. For Caitlin Power, Remark created a neutral contemporary look with two coats Chinchilly (granite grey). Both nail looks were finished with essie’s Matte About You top coat to create a simple yet ultra luxe nail.

With some of the simpler nail designs, you can easily do this at home with essie nail colours and the perfect top coat, whether it be Matte About You or Good to Go (all of which retail for $10 each).

But lucky for us, during WMCFW we had a chance to sneak between shows to see essie’s Lead Nail Artist Rita Remark and get our nails done. This is what she had in store…

On my nails, Remark created a monochromatic nail design with two coats of slate grey Cashmere Bathrobe, a middle line of No Place like Chrome and thinly lined the edges with After School Boy Blazer – think of a futuristic variation of the Mondrian.

On Vanessa, Remark used Shearling Darling and Rock the Boat to draw strategically placed triangles creating a stencil-like design. We love the simplicity of the look and how it highlights negative space.

Remark has a way of looking at your style and suggesting the perfect nail complement. She did it with the many shows this season at WMCFW, previously at NYFW and she followed suit with us. She truly is the Pat McGrath of nail art.
