Combining Fur and Florals: a Bold Statement or Overkill?
Whether you love or hate fur, it’s in style and here to stay. Proof of this can be seen in Farley Chatto’s show during WMCFW where he showcased a variety of pelts including stunning silver fox and luxurious chinchilla (to read more, click here). Although I can only aspire to afford his creations, I still love fur and the warmth and style it offers – we do live in Canada after all.
During WMCFW, I sported a fur and floral combo with a Mongolian lamb collar added to my leather jacket, paired with floral trousers. I also added an ear cuff to complete the look.
In my eyes, you cannot go wrong with fur. This collar can be added to almost any outfit including sweaters, blouses, and in my case, a leather jacket. Patterned trousers are everywhere this season, and these offer the perfect amount of foliage. It also turns out our Assistant Editor, Vanessa Coiffi, had a similar thought process.

What are your thoughts on floral and fur? Love it or loathe it? For some it may be overkill but for me, it’s the perfect combination.

Bellavance at the shOws | Fall/Winter 2014
Bellavance is kickin’ it old school in the Fall/Winter 2014 Collection, bringing an educational and military twist to the collection. Designers Nolan Bellavance and Ava Hama aim to make clothing that is approachable as well as aspirational and they did just that in their latest collection for Fall/Winter 2014.
The collection brought a number of techniques that tied their vision of rule breaking uniforms into every look, from mohair to denim, it’s easy to see that this is not your average uniform. This look is channeling a rebellious jersey look inspired by a 1920s school picture, completed with a lined pattern inspired by a chain link fence.
This rebellious school girl is breaking all the school house rules in a collection stacked with prints and pleats. The fabric was pleated first, then the pattern was printed on through screen printing, creating a broken patterned look as the model walked down the runway. This process was both unique and visually interesting as each design hit the runway having us guess what the print may be.
The garbage bag look, or so they call it created an avant-garde look that was inspired by a graduation sash having it cover one shoulder, draping across the chest. The fabric is light weight, resembling both a silky look and feel.
Bellavance brought a rebellious and edgy feel to the runway having each look resemble a rule broken uniform of some sort, bringing forward a creative and unique twist to a classic and conservative style.

That’s it winter, I’m SO over you. This winter has been extremely grey and frigid and I think I’ve had just about enough. I have officially started planning a getaway – ideally to a sun soaked destination, where the temperature is in the double digit positives, not negatives.
Until then, I’m layering up. I decided to go with a neon sweater for a bright pop of colour and pair it with a pair of printed leggings and one of my favourite oversized scarves. Since it’s -7ºC today, which is sadly considered “warm” during this Polar Freeze, I threw on a leather jacket and wedge booties to complete the look. I even decided to be adventurous and go for a skate along the canal. Bad idea. Horrible Idea. I spent more time on my face than on my feet. Humiliation aside, I’ll continue to daydream of warmer days and until then, I’ll just have to grin and bear it until mother nature loves us again.
